An Iain (M.) Banks Fanzine

Welcome to the distribution site for the Iain (M.) Banks fanzine - The Banksoniain.
It started as a quarterly publication covering all things to do with the Iain Banks (who also publishes as Iain M. Banks), but is now published every six months, so look for the next issue in August 2008. All issues are available as in PDF format from the links below.

The Banksoniain keeps a diary of Iain (M) Banks related events: TV and Radio appearances, Book Festivals, Conventions, Book publication dates, and more including the 2008 theatre dates for The Wasp Factory.

Banksoniain Issue 13 (465Kb) released 20th February 2008

The new book, Matter, is out and we have a timeline of its development, and details of the booktour as well as other Banks events of 2008.
As there is a Scottish theatre tour of The Wasp Factory we look at the history of the production.
We also look back on Banks appearances at Mecon X, the Cheltenham Literary Festival and a Scottish Government event is Brussels.

Banksoniain Issue 12 (210Kb) released 2nd August 2007

Looking forward to the next Banks book, Matter, as well as the reaction to the last one, The Steep Approach to Garbadale.
The Book Biography is Complicity this issue, so we have the film to consider as well.
The unpublished works of Iain Banks are the subject of the Banks Obscura .
An extra special article goes into the studio with Gary Lloyd and looks at the Espedair Street tribute album project he is working on with Iain.
There is also a listing of the book festivals Iain is expected to appear at in the second half of the year.

Banksoniain Issue 11 (249Kb) released 23rd February 2007

Looking at the brand new Banks book, The Steep Approach to Garbadale, and back at Against a Dark Background.
There are also reports on the Bridging Fantasies - Iain Banks conference that took place last September, and the Mark Lawson interview on BBC4 from November.

Banksoniain Issue 10 (425Kb) released 28th August 2006

Focussing on The Crow Road this issue looks at both the book and the TV series.
There is also the latest news on Iain next book, as well as a report on a reading he gave at the Edinburgh Book Festival.
We also have a report on Eastercon, and details of a few Banks related events coming up in both short and long term.

Banksoniain Issue 9 (252Kb) released 1st March 2006

Use of Weapons is our centrespread retrospective for this issue.
Pat Gibson talks about his appearance on Mastermind, and we cover Iain's own Mastermind appearance as well as his University Challenge captaincy.
We have the regular round up of Banks related news in the Media Scanner column.
But, saving the best for last, those of you waiting for Banks's Next Book are in for a treat, and we also have the text of a Banks work that was recently auctioned for charity.

Banksoniain Issue 8 (223Kb) released 29th November 2005

Canal Dreams gets the 'book biography' treatment but from a new writer.
We have the regular round up of Banks related news in the Media Scanner column, but also a special round up of Worldcon news and view with a special personal view from guest writer Coercri.
Not "THE" Iain Banks returns, as does eBayWatch, with Banks in Translation looking at the Baltic States as a whole.
The "Culture" books as a Mastermind subject is also covered in depth.

Banksoniain Issue 7 (150Kb) released 3rd August 2005

The Player of Games gets the 'book biography' treatment in a shorter than normal Banksoniain that makes it out for Worldcon, and we also take a quick look at the story of the film of the book. Media Scanner as usual trawls through Banks's recent media coverage and Banks in Translation goes on holiday to Spain. Other than that we concentrate on the paperback publication of The Algebraist in the UK, with a round up of the short publicity tour that went with it and an in depth report on his appearance in Cambridge. There is also a quick discourse on the new covers (as seen in the link below). Finally, the first report of what Banks is planning for his next book gets a brief mention.

Banksoniain Issue 6 (233Kb) released 30th May 2005

The book biography feature is for The State of the Art, and there is a great deal of news to cover with a special feature on the Hugos. Two other special articles: one about Iain’s appearance on a TV magic show in the UK and another on the investment performance of his first editions. The Unwritten Banks looks again at The Bridge and its theatrical and audio interpretations. Critical Banks looks as the entries in The Encyclopaedia of Science Fiction, and Banks in Translation goes Finnish. Finally, we have a little snippet of news about Banks’s next book.

Banksoniain Issue 5 (241Kb) released 16th February 2005

This issue the book biography centre spread is for Espedair Street, along with a special Unwritten Banks that looks at the radio series, the film, the album and the musical that it has inspired - not all of which have seen the light of day (yet).
The musical focus is kept to in Banks Obscura which looks at Iain's commercially released compilation album, as well as other Banks related musical trivia.
A double page Media Scanner reflects how busy Iain has been over the last quarter, in the press, on TV and the radio.
Banks in Translation looks to Turkey, whilst SF fans get a look in with an academic discussion of the politics of The Culture's interventions in the Critical Banks column. This issue's Not "THE" Iain Banks is almost out of this world.

Banksoniain Issue 4 (218Kb) released 9th November 2004

This issue looks at the Publicity Tour for The Algebraist including his live appearances in bookshops, on the television and radio. Media Scanner checks out other reasons why Iain has been in the public eye.
We also look at both the Online and Print reviews of the book, and have details of the audio versions of it and Raw Spirit.
Our "book biography" series has now reached Consider Phlebas which gets the centre spread retrospective, as well as being part of the focus of Critical Banks which discusses an article that compares his first books in each genre.
The recently released The Crow Road DVD is reviewed.
The regulars are back. Banks Obscura looks into the catalogue of the National Portrait Gallery and also into the new Guinness Book of Records, and there is a special report on the Iain Banks Big Band.
Banks in Translation goes East to Japan. A photography writer is the subject of Not "THE" Iain Banks, and there is a quick look at the phrases "Space Opera" and "Wide screen Baroque" which frequently pop up in reviews of Banks's work.

This issue has more information on the new book, The Algebraist, including details of the UK signing tour.
There is also news of The Crow Road DVD release and a US publication of The State of the Art collection.
His third novel, The Bridge, is reached in the publication history of Banks and The Unwritten Banks looks at the CD which the book inspired.
We also have a report on Iain's appearance at the Edinburgh Book Festival.
The regulars, Media Scanner looks at recent press covered of Banks and eBayWatch looks at recent sales of Banks related items, are joined by Critical Banks which each issue will discuss a critical article about the man's works.
Banks in Translation looks at the 2004 editions of his works not in the English language.
